FocalPoint®GS automated screening and LGS location guided screening

Automated screening of gynae cytology slides is used in US, Canada and Europe to speed up the screening process. This is currently being evaluated in the UK and the Health Assessment Trial (HTAs) commenced in Manchester in Spring 2006. Other UK trials are also in progress now.

There are two stages to automated screening

The screening process where SurePath™ slides are run through a FocalPoint®GS automated imager. Each slide is scanned and using a series of algorithms identifies up to 25% of a standard population which require no further review.

The remaining 75% of slides are equally divided into 5 Quintiles with each slide having 10 FOV (fields of view) that the FocalPoint®GS has identified as may contain possible abnormalities

These slides are then reviewed on the Location Guided Screener

The Location Guided Screener (LGS) Microscopy Review Station consists of an automatic XY stage*, a computer, a camera and a high-resolution flat screen monitor.

(* It can be fitted to most standard microscopes. Screeners and pathologists are able to use the microscope in the normal way whilst the LGS stage is attached.)

The LGS does not have to be connected directly to FocalPoint®GS since the data can be stored on a removable hard drive and transferred with the slides to offsite reporting centres where the screening staff are based
